Clinical and Laboratory Diagnosis of Red Blood Cell Disorders: A Case-Based Algorithmic Approach

Friday symposium preceding the 60th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting



Using a case-based approach, the overall objective of this program is to provide an update on interpretation and optimal application of standard and evolving test repertoire to diagnosis of RBC disorders.

Combining the clinical and laboratory experience of our faculty, we will illustrate the practical application of testing algorithms derived from the Mayo Clinic practice and illustrate how unnecessary, redundant, and costly laboratory tests can be eliminated while maintaining the highest quality medical care.


Intended Audience:

Hematologists, oncologists, hematopathologists, and pathologists who provide care for patients with hematological disorders.


Conference Objectives:

Upon completion of the conference, participants should be able to:

-Describe the algorithmic strategy for the diagnostic workup of erythrocytosis and understand the causes of hereditary erythrocytosis.

-Discuss the general approach to evaluation of hemolytic anemia.

-Determine the approach to evaluating a patient with direct antiglobulin negative hemolytic anemia.

-Discuss the approach to evaluating a patient suspected of hereditary hemolytic anemia.

-Apply an algorithmic approach to thrombotic microangiopathies.
